19th October 2024, Met Hotel, Leeds
YHACS (Yorkshire and Humber Association of CIvic Societies) celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a lunch for members at Leeds' Met Hotel with 2 GCDCS Exec. members of the 60 attending.
The day began with a choice of 2 walks around Leeds centre: Historical Buildings or the city's modern architecture. There was much evidence on both walks of the need to reflect and enhance the city's history.
Lunch followed with a presentation by Abigail Scott Paul, Global Director of the Humanise Campaign, at Thomas Heatherwick Studios. Humanise is the call 'to end boring, soulless buildings' and a '10 year global campaign to confront the public health issues caused by boring buildings and inspire the public to demand better'. An idea which many wholeheartedly agree with but, going by the questions afterwards, also struggled to see its implementation in a non-city setting!
*a copy of the book Humanise: A Maker's Guide to Building Our World by Thomas Heatherwick, will be made available to GCDCS members to read, in due course
