On Saturday 21st our Chairman Alan Nicholson and Martyn along with Grimsby Rotarians, joined the Grimsby in Bloom team at the Duke of York Gardens for a litter pick along the River Freshney. There was a good crowd of volunteers including families. After a safety briefing, our team supported by 2 boys from Macaulay Street School, was allotted a specific spot on the river. Armed with litter pickers, of varying lengths, and plastic sacks we set off for the Freshney.
Our stretch of the river was only 100 yards long but we gathered a wide variety of rubbish: sweet wrappers, bottles, tin cans, many bottles, two traffic cones and an office chair. The last 2 items retrieved with the help of a man in a canoe! The school boys were keen and worked very hard and were particularly excited to spot a ‘champagne’ bottle in the river but unfortunately this turned out to be a wine bottle!
Have a look at the photographs of rubbish pulled from the river and its banks. The river, as advised by Keep Britain Tidy reps, is clean as evidenced by the presence of fish and shrimps. It’s a great pity that people do not respect it and would rather treat it as a tip. The next litter pick is in January.
Our thanks to the Man in a Canoe!
An amazing amount and variety of rubbish - unfortunately
