New: a proposed Grimsby and Cleethorpes Group of The Watkin Society
Thursday 21st July we had a very well attended and interesting Talk from Geoff Scargill of The Watkin Society https://www.friendsofrosehill.org/the-watkin-society-watsoc/
‘Watkin’ being Sir Edward Watkin (1819-1901), Chairman of Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR)who, amongst many other vast achievements, should be remembered in our area for developing the railway into the docks company and subsequent world-renowned fishing port, and also for founding Cleethorpes as a resort and much of the seafront infrastructure we see today.
A report of this Talk will appear on this website in the next few days.
Anyone who has an interest in Watkin’s achievements – both here and in the wider world – is invited to make contact either through our Contacts Page or to receive information and newsletters from The Watkin Society (‘Watsoc’).
In addition, it has been proposed that a Grimsby Cleethorpes Group of Watkin Society be set up and anyone who is interested is invited to participate. Towards this, a ZOOM conference will be held on Thursday 1st September at 7.15pm to discuss all things Watkin and how best to move forward with celebrating his achievements in our area – again, you will need to make email contact with us to receive the Zoom invite during the coming weeks.
Attendees to Thursday’s Talk who left their contact details with us for more information or to participate in the Zoom conference will have already received an initial email welcoming them to the interest group. If you haven’t yet received your email then please get in touch so that WatSoc do not lose you!
