Our speaker for the March meeting of the Society was George Bullen who is one of our members. George and his wife have been very keen travellers on their narrowboat throughout the canals and waterways of England for many years and shared their experience of this particular journey with us.
Boston to Bootle by Barge, was very comprehensively illustrated. From Boston they travelled on the canal to Lincoln, via the River Trent to the potteries, Manchester and finally Bootle before tying up in Stanley Dock in Liverpool. They stopped off to explore some of the interesting towns on the way and frequently found quaint pubs.
Navigating a narrow boat along the canals is not easy at the best of times, with not only narrow locks and tunnels but hazards such weeds and debris that can get caught in the propeller. Managing the locks can be tricky with steep climbs up iron ladders to the lock side. The photographs revealed that this task usually fell to Sue.
It was a most enjoyable talk and it was well attended with a number of fellow enthusiasts in the audience.
