Our first public Talk for 2014 is on January 18th by local historian David Smith, is about Cleethorpes’ hamlet of Beaconthorpe. This area grew to provide Cleethorpes with many of its services - from worship and education, to public utilities and transport.
Beaconthorpe: named after a beacon, demolished in 1864 but erected in 1834 by the Admiralty in an effort to reduce the large number of wrecks in the Humber (internet source: Survey of English Place-Names; Nottingham.ac.uk; ‘A county-by-county guide to the linguistic origins of England’s place-names – a project of the English Place-Name Society, founded 1923’.)
